Frequently Asked Questions
What is The 1010 Project?
The 1010 Project is a nonprofit humanitarian organization based in Denver, CO. The 1010 Project builds relationships and partnerships with creative and innovative people throughout the world, learning and working together to break the cycle of poverty for life.
What does The 1010 Project do?
The 1010 Project provides income-generating grants to indigenous development partners in Kenya and raises awareness in the United States on behalf of the global poor.
Who supports The 1010 Project?
Our supporters come from every walk of life. We connect communities in rural Kenya and Nairobi with communities in the Denver metro area and beyond. The 1010 Project has four active campus groups at Missouri State University, the University of Missouri-Columbia, Colorado Christian University, and the University of Denver. As a Denver-based nonprofit organization, we are focused on growing our local presence through various events, activities, and collaborations.
Are we a microfinance institution?
In a way, yes. Microfinance is just one income-generating activity that our Kenyan partners use to develop their communities.
How is The 1010 Project different from other organizations?
Our development model is a catalyst for breaking the multidimensional cycle of poverty.

We are intentional about friendships. Many humanitarian organizations judge success in terms of input and output. While we do track and analyze quantitative data (accountability and impacts), we also put a great deal of emphasis on qualitative results. We don’t view the leaders of Kenyan community-based organizations simply as partners – they are our friends. The 1010 Project connects resource with need in the context of friendship. We offer a helping hand, which means listening to, learning from, and humbly serving alongside the true experts in the field of development – the poor.
What does the name mean? What is 1010?
Our name is based on a verse in the Bible, John 10:10, where Jesus stated, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” The 1010 Project believes that poverty steals, kills, and destroys life all over the world, and that it should be the work of people of faith to alleviate global poverty. That being said, The 1010 Project is not a faith-based organization per se, but we have no qualms about referring to ourselves as faith-motivated.
